I’ll probably finish it, but what a shame something I’ve been looking forward to for so long, is so disappointing. starts immediately after the ending of her previous book Mount, after the death of his favourite horse and his wife, Taggie, facing chemotherapy for her cancer. To use words Cooper would doubtless scorn at as PC abominations (she has said she misses wolf whistling and that modern men are “always crying” and “growing beards”), many of her heroes and plots are 'problematic' and possibly 'triggering' for today’s audiences.

I also find it unnecessary that dogs and horses get equal character footing to humans but perhaps that says more about me than Jilly. I felt that the sing a long soccer (football) rhymes took up a lot of the book and added nothing to the story, although maybe the hardcore dedicated soccer fans love those bits in the book. She should now feel free to pop her feet up in front of the fire and cuddle her pooches and enjoy freedom from publishers. Finlay commented: “Jilly Cooper has been a shining star of Transworld’s list for over 40 years, and we are incredibly proud to publish her. I had known nothing about horses or riding, but was riveted to every page of those books as there was so much life going on around the riders.People just dont do that, theyre introduced by their nicknames OR their real names, not both and not at the frequency it happens in the book. It’s banal and cliched - while I know only a little about football I’m pretty certain the author knows less than me. Cooper, who is based in Gloucestershire, said: “Footballers bring such joy and excitement to the world. I managed to reach the end, trying in vain to find the Jilly prose, sadly it was nowhere to be found.

Or for a quicker introduction, her 1970s novels (each titled with the respective heroine’s name) which are now almost historic romance in a wonderfully retro way. Jilly Cooper's wit and wicked way with words is still sparkling, but I suspect the PC world we currently live in has softened her more outrageous and naughty stretches of humour and raunchiness. Some were rhyming ones , some meant to be amusing , the type of thing a 12 year old would find hilarious. Despite Rupert’s cold demeanour, he will be a success, as indeed this talented man has already proved in his previous show-jumping, TV, MP, school, orchestral and artistic endeavours. I had a real soft spot for adorable little Dolfy as he found his feet in the world and had his talent recognised.I would recommend reading (or re-reading) her school novel, Wicked, before tackling Tackle as many of the young footballers come from this book. will get involved with a struggling football team and, despite the odds, will lead them to some kind of sporting triumph. I could almost imagine that possibly her ideas were in the book, but written by someone else to assist at some points. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. But, with every book, we are gifted complex and charismatic characters whose sharp and witty dialogue is evidence of the intelligence of their creator. and usually what you get is a fantastic mix of outrageous characters you love and hate and rip roaring spicy plotlines riddled with silly puns, but this time it falls totally flat.Having said that, Tackle often felt like a patchwork quilt, sewing together many of the books Jilly's written over the years. Nor do the rival local football team, their duplicitous chairman and their corrupt dealings make things easier - let the scandals, sabotage and seductions begin.
