The final hour thankfully picks up the pace as Lynch’s nightmarish odyssey reaches a gripping (and at times terrifying) crescendo. flavours) this disc represents the best that Inland Empire will ever look and sound – plus, the restoration has been signed off by none other than David Lynch himself.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. That is also the case on this Studio Canal release, as I suspected it would be since it is touted as the 4K remaster. Thankfully this only applies to the one scene, where Nikki is on the phone and the disembodied Phantom is speaking to her. None of these feel that essential, but they still contain enough of Lynch’s idiosyncratic genius to make them a worthwhile watch.

Even if everything doesn’t get ported over, Criterion has assembled a rather satisfying set of features for the release, all of the content worth the effort. I should also point out that none of what I have mentioned should be taken as criticism, just as the “compromise” grade I ended up giving the presentation should be ignored: this is just how the film is always going to look to some degree thanks to the SD source, and no matter what is done it’s not going to look “reference quality.

Well, this new release comes from a 4K restoration but as the picture quality is so rough to begin with, it is hard to ascertain exactly what benefits a 4K restoration can provide to standard definition DV footage…and anyone expecting any significant improvements to picture quality will leave disappointed. LUCAS as Nikki’s husband, with supporting cast, JUSTIN THEROUX (Nikki’s co-star, Devon) and JEREMY IRONS (Kingsley Stewart), as well as an original soundtrack by David Lynch himself. He would then come up with scenarios and lines of dialogue, send them off to her, and they would get together and film them, Dern admitting she didn’t understand much of it. StudioCanal will release on Blu-ray David Lynch's Inland Empire (2006), starring Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons, Justin Theroux, Karolina Gruszka, and Grace Zabriskie. LUCAS as Nikki’s husband, with supporting cast, JUSTIN THEROUX (Nikki’s co-star, Devon) and JEREMY IRONS (Kingsley Stewart), as well as an original soundtrack by DAVID LYNCH himself.

Located in London, FilmJuice in 2011, it has a remit to provide high quality, up-to-date easily accessible wealth of information for the film fan. Arguably no director in cinema history has come closer to allowing the audience to experience a waking dream (or nightmare) quite like Lynch. Barney’s book David Lynch: Interviews, featuring the filmmaker talking about the experience of making the film, right down to editing all of that footage.

Motion can look a bit off and adds to that video feel, almost certainly due to the frame rate at which it was shot. That being said, this new disc is provides us with the very best picture quality that is possible to extract from DV.Yet I can’t say how it plays into or adds to the main “story” or even whether it clarifies anything. On the plus side, it's good for UK fans to finally get a copy of the "more things that happened" scenes, which I personally love. Similar to some of Criterion’s other editions for Lynch’s films, the disc also includes a recorded excerpt of Lynch reading from Room to Dream, the 2018 book he wrote alongside Kristine McKenna.
