Wildling: My Autobiography
About this deal
On 15 September 2007 he scored his first goal for the Robins in an away match against Coventry City winning 3–0. The club would like to announce the appointment of Michael McIndoe as our new manager and Robbie Park as his assistant manager. Meanwhile, files are still sitting with the Crown Prosecution Service as it decides whether or not to charge him. The Scottish winger was voted in the top five footballers of the year in The Times Football Yearbook 2004/05 alongside Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.
before McIndoe was declared bankrupt in 2015 and the Metropolitan Police launched a fraud investigation through the specialist Falcon Unit at New Scotland Yard. While playing for Doncaster Rovers he set a record scoring ten penalties which was more than any player in the English Football League in the 2005/06 season. Now 42, McIndoe still has a bald patch on the back of his head from being hit with a crowbar during a gang fight involving knives, bats and golf clubs.
There is, however, another theory that he keeps a low profile because he knows that a lot of the people who lost out financially hold a serious grudge against him. There is only one working turnstile among the whitewashed walls of Raydale Park, home of Gretna 2008 FC, and it is manned by the club’s chairman. Alongside the date of the transfer, the clubs involved and the transfer fee, it also displays the market value of the player at the time of the transfer. Dodging drugs, gangs and having my dad tell me he'd 'snap my leg in two' set me up for crazy career in football says Michael McIndoe". Several national newspapers have allegedly linked McIndoe to an 'investment scheme' but McIndoe has always strongly denied any allegation of wrongdoing. After being given the caretaker manager role, in his first match, he led Gretna 2008 in a 3–1 win against Edinburgh University in the first round of the Scottish Cup.
I am under no illusion of the hard work required to get the club up the table but when I was given the privilege of being asked to join the club, it was a very simple decision for me to say yes. He played professional football for fifteen years at ten English football clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bristol City and Barnsley. Then there is the story he tells about the time he went round to his father’s flat, where he would sometimes sleep on the floor, and was given an ultimatum. This was despite a lavish lifestyle with multiple properties, expensive cars and a nightclub in London’s West End. He and his coaching staff left Gretna 2008 on 24 April 2023 to manage in the higher divisions of Scottish football.Since joining Wolves he played in every match making 32 appearances, scoring 3 goals and numerous assists. He was brought up by his mother on The Calders in Edinburgh, a concrete estate of high-rise tower blocks that were put up in the 1970s. His talent was never in question but his off-field problems with alcohol addiction meant in December 1999, he was entered into the Priory. Some reports, challenged by McIndoe, have stated that more than 300 people were owed money, a Who’s Who of the football industry that included Robbie Keane, Jimmy Bullard, Gabby Agbonlahor and many others from the Premier League to the lower divisions. Ex-professional footballer, Michael McIndoe, has broken his silence over claims he conned millions of pounds from fellow players, saying he has never run any kind of investment or Ponzi scheme.
That was when Paul Merson, a former England international battling his own demons, paid him a visit and, unofficially, became his mentor. Michael McIndoe’s playing career took in more than 500 matches with 10 English clubs before he decided, at the age of 31, that he wanted to find new adventures away from football. Known for his crossing, technical ability and speed, he was a proven goalscorer at every level including League Cup goals against Premier League clubs Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa.
As with any other financial investigation, the prosecution – and defence – cases will hinge on what can be proven and it is forensic accountants who set about amassing that evidence. He was never arrested, let alone charged, and he has always insisted that he never set up an investment or Ponzi scheme that offered participants the chance to make big profits.
