About this deal

Incorrectly, many think that in her 1818 gothic novel, Mary Shelley focused her fascination on the creature that was pieced together by the troubled doctor. Elizabeth insists to Victor Moritz that she hasn’t seen Henry for four months—since their engagement, in fact. Arriving on the set of Frankenstein, James Whale immediately made his presence felt, insisting upon the casting of two of his former collaborators in the roles of Henry and Elizabeth: Colin Clive, who had played Captain Stanhope in Journey’s End, and Mae Clarke, who had played Myra in Waterloo Bridge. Near the castle was an old watchtower where Henry Frankenstein conducted a series of bizarre experiments in the late 19th century that ruined the family legacy, making the name Frankenstein synonymous with monsters and horror. The exhausted Henry is taken home after Waldman promises to destroy the monster, but instead Waldman is killed by the escaping monster” (Overview).

But for all Whale’s sympathy for Henry, Frankenstein leaves us in no doubt that he is also the villain of the piece. It is difficult to deal with this aspect of the film without reference to the novel from which its ideas were taken. Though included in the film's initial run, his next exclamation of "Now I know what it feels like to be God!

It was decreed that they could not execute him a second time, and they were forced to set Ygor free. After telling them of Henry's decision to leave the school, Waldman agreed to accompany them to Henry's lab to talk some sense into him. This is a beautiful scene, and beautifully acted by Colin Clive; and fascinatingly, it was not in the shooting script.

This is likely derived from the fact that in the novel, Victor Frankenstein attended school at Ingolstadt in Bavaria, Germany. Dwight Frye’s Fritz is simply Renfield with a hunch; the actor gives it his best shot, but the role was an insult. They also remove a man hanging from a gibbet, but his broken neck requires that a new brain be found.Waldman demands proof, and Frankenstein tells him that he shall have it… As the storm continues to rage, Frankenstein and Fritz raise the shrouded figure to the roof of the laboratory, where its electrodes are struck by lightening.

His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness. Waldman had been Henry Frankenstein's favourite teacher during the aspiring young scientist's time as a student there. Alas, to this day no surviving footage from these tests has ever been located, so we will probably never know for certain. Frankenstein had been in print only a few years when it was first dramatised; and over the following hundred years and more, stage version followed stage version, each of them altering the story to suit their own ends, and all of them contributing to what many people today consider to be “the” story of Frankenstein and his Creature.

Later, James Whale took over the project, replacing prospective star Bela Lugosi and cameraman Karl Freund, who were transferred along with Florey to Murders in the Rue Morgue (see below).

The character of Professor Bernstein in the 1957 Hammer film The Curse of Frankenstein is meant to be a replacement for Doctor Waldman. Fritz recoils at the sight of a hand emerging from beneath the sheet, but Frankenstein admires the fruit of his labours. As a reward, Whale was offered his choice of project, and cast his gaze over all of the films in development at Universal, looking for one that would offer him, as he put it, “strong meat”.And while many better films would follow, these pioneering works remained, and remain, consistently popular. All my previous commentary aside and despite my attempts to examine the more subtle aspects of Frankenstein, without question the film's defining moment comes from the actual revelation of the legendary monster itself. Literally kept in wraps until this moment, Karloff's rendition of the scarred creature makes us immediately forget all the cheesy knock-offs and commercial effigies of the monster's persona. Switzerland is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities. A former production designer and stage director, James Whale had successfully adapted for the screen his own stage production of the play Journey’s End, then scored a second triumph with his filming of Waterloo Bridge.
