This is due to the plastic nature of faery forms, which are often glimpsed in states of transition from one shape to the next. Brilliantly written and illustrated by Brian Froud and Ari Berk, 'Goblins' combines the detailed, folkloric approach of 'Faeries' and 'Runes of Elfland' with the wackiness of 'Lady Cottington' to make their most visually rich and outrageous book yet. Like Faeries, the films were ground-breaking -- pioneering new puppet design and performance techniques.

Wendy studied music and drama at Interlochen Arts Academy, then fabric design, jewelry, and ceramics at The Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. With a scientific rigour that is second to none and only matched in enthusiasm, perhaps, by the Muppet Labs, Ari Berk and Brian Froud set out to unearth the truth about the goblins (err, Goblins! The artist has finished every detail, and every edge is hard and bright -- which doesn't allow me into their world, my eye slides right off that shiny surface. What, I ask, is the most difficult thing about rendering his vision of the world and its magical spirit in paint?

I find that in the fantasy genre, too many young painters over-paint their pictures; they're a bit too. Brian's faeries and magical vision of the world so impressed the American filmmaker Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets) that he asked Brian to come to New York to design two feature films: The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. The conceit of renowned fantasy illustrator Froud's latest book (after The Runes of Elfland; Lady Cottington's Faerie Album; Faeries; etc. Among the contents so minutely examined are the goblin's holiday Almanack; a field guide to goblin types, with portraits and principal characteristics; and vast amounts of ill-assorted notes about goblins at play and, uh, play. Traditional cultures have always recognized and honored the animate spirits of the earth," Brian adds, "but in western culture we've rather left that behind.that infest our refrigerators, our pets, the spaces between our sofa cushions and in fact, our very lives. Those who prefer traditional fairies with shapely figures will snap up British artist Brian Froud's Lady Cottington's Fairy Album, the sequel to Froud's Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book. Brian Froud's illustrations are both mysterious and ethereal, guaranteed to enthral and amuse all who set eyes upon its pages.

It was on the set of The Dark Crystal that Brian met Wendy, who created the "gelflings" and other creatures for the film.I've been actively engaged with mythic imagery ever since I picked up that Rackham book," he says, "but it really came into focus for me when I moved from London to Dartmoor. Brian created concept designs for a sequel to THE DARK CRYSTAL, produced by the Jim Henson Company and is developing concept designs for feature film projects now in development. So I said to myself: What do I have to do to convince a publisher that there's an audience for this art?
