So according to this preface, I shouldn't even be reading this book but as a lowly lay person should have picked up the "more accessible" version.
The full-size book gives pastors and other Bible teachers much more detail in a fuller treatment with which to shepherd God’s flock. Deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, a doomed science expedition killed the subterranean fabled leader, and suddenly, it seemed that evil was dead, and all was right with the world. The characters in "Deeper" were more developed than in "Tunnels", probably because they've just gone through a lot, but still, I really liked that.If you are hungry and thirsty for more life, more joy, more peace, and more Jesus, this is a book for you. I have since bought the book for everyone in my church small group and want to come back to it again myself. As I was reading this book, I found myself wishing Ortlund would be more practical—I wanted action steps I could do.
You simply open your Bible and let God surprise you each day with the wonder of his love, proven in Christ and experienced in the Spirit” (140). It really is a book that should be meditated on and put down while you think and breathe in the realities of Christ and his work. So I have embarked on an entirely different plan, I am led to the passage, and I stay there and clean the bones of a verse. The author answers in the book’s nine chapters by supporting the single premise that growth comes through fixing our gaze on Christ.
This book was much more interesting, there was a lot happening, there were many intrigues, and I feel like the characters were given more depth. But the concise version is an inviting 88 pages (minus documentation and index) for busy Christ-followers.
