I felt it was for this I had come; to wake at dawn on a hillside and look out on a world for which I had no words, to start at the beginning, speechless and without plan, in a place that still had no memories for me. There was an instance where Lee describes an incident when a drunken father attempts to rape his daughter: Lee steps in to protect him from the mother! Small 8vo, 238 pages, illustrations by Leonard Rosoman, page marker ribbon, fine condition in cloth binding, number 200 of an edition of 2000 copies.
Lee spent a year earning a pittance as a hod carrier in London, then took ship for the Bay of Biscay with a knapsack, a tent, and a violin. This grossly oversimplified understanding has created many complexities in our lives and taken away from us the very fundamentals of the joy of living. I found a rough little hollow out of the wind, a miniature crater among the rocks, ate some bread and dates, unrolled the blanket and wrapped myself inside it.Some carried bags of tools, or shabby cardboard suitcases; some wore the ghosts of city suits; some, when they stopped to rest, carefully removed their shoes and polished them vaguely with handfuls of grass.
I liked the drawings, which remind me of the illustrations in children's books I read during the 60s. Our donations to The Rainbow Centre have helped provide an education and a safe haven to hundreds of children who live in appalling conditions.
Just want to Thank you for this sight, and for nudging me to get out and kayak this weekend with my family. Laurie Lee published four collections of poems: The Sun My Monument (1944), The Bloom of Candles (1947), My Many-Coated Man (1955) and Pocket Poets (1960).
